E-MOBILITY 2023

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE IN GERMANY

I-WUNDER is developing the “E-Mobility 2023” application to easily explain the status of the charging infrastructure in Germany and predict further developments. According to a recent study, at least 440,000 charging points will be needed by 2030. Can Germany achieve this ambitious goal?

Find out with our app, e.g.

  • Press the play button at the bottom left
  • Search for your city or district (tip: you can zoom in on federal states with a double click)
  • Find the city with the highest expansion rate
  • Find out the month in 2023 in which Emden in Lower Saxony will already reach the 2030 target...

THIS IS WHAT THE APPLICATION SHOWS

  • Expansion: Shows the number of locations, charging stations and charging points in the respective month and compared to the previous year.
  • Attractiveness: Shows the number of charging points per 1,000 registered cars as well as the number of registered cars per charging point (including combustion engines).
  • Demand 2030: Shows the proportion of charging stations achieved in relation to the minimum number of charging stations required for 2030.

The application shows the monthly development of the expansion of the charging station infrastructure starting in January 2017. Not all possible information is recorded. Of Tesla's Supercharger stations (approx. 1,900 charging points), only charging points accessible to third-party brands are included. Private charging stations and charging stations for electrically powered two-wheelers such as e-bikes and e-scooters are not included.

THE 5 MOST EXCITING RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS ARE

  1. Like all the years before, 2022 was once again a record year for the expansion of the charging infrastructure!
  2. E-mobility is not just for big cities, because the charging stations are evenly distributed across large, medium-sized and small towns depending on the population.
  3. The expansion of fast charging stations is still not high enough and has been less than 20% in the last 3 years.
  4. With the same expansion as in 2022, only around half of the planned target of 440,000 charging points will be achieved by 2030.
  5. The Autostadt Emden is expected to reach its 2030 goal in October 2023.
